Guitar Lesson - Tapping: The Basics of Sounding Good.

Tapping on the guitar is a really fun and surprisingly simple technique, but it is easy to make it sound bad.

Luckily, it's also easy to make it sound good.

Outlining chords is the easiest way to do this and the best place to start.

Tapping is simply using a combination of left and right hand hammer-ons and pull-offs to usually create a fast passage of notes.

In this guitar lesson on tapping we will take a starting note - A on the 5th fret, highest string, and place our first finger there.

Then we will use the 12th fret with the right hand, tapping the first, or middle finger here.

These two notes will be the same whether playing over a major or minor chord, and only one note will need to change. This is played in this video with the pinky.

The theory behind this is simple:

3 frets from the start note, gives us the minor as it's the minor or flat 3rd note

4 frets from the start note gives us the major as it's the major 3rd.

So, frets 5, 8 and 12 would outline the A minor and frets 5, 9 and 12 would outline the A major.
