Tonex or Quad Cortex?

Let's Compare the TONES!

So to an extent this one is a bit of fun. I recently made a video where I played different presets on the Quad Cortex or the Tonex, and the aim was for the viewer to guess which was being used.

If you're here after watching the video, the answers are coming:)

If you haven't seen it yet, have a look here:

CAN You Guess?

As I said, this is a bit of fun, but also very interesting. If you want a great sounding device, do you need to spend £1500 on a QC or Kemper, or is £150 or even less going to get you the tones you want?

Of course, a lot of the Quad Cortex costs are due to the extras - loads of routing options, touch screen editing on the device, capture technology right there in the unit, more sounds on the cloud than you can shake a stick at... Oh and let's not forget loads of studio grade effects, from compressors to drives to modulation to delay and reverb and more. Everything you could ever want in a small package.

With the Tonex, you have core tones, yes, but much of the above just isn't present, or if it is you have to pay extra. A good example of this is the Tonex Capture, which you'll need to get if you do want to capture an amps sounds. This little box sets you back another £180 or so.

Then if you want lots of effects, you're going to need to get a multifx unit, like a line 6 Helix HX.

I'm lucky enough to have both, and would I swap out the QC at the moment? No, certainly not. It's just too much in one package.

Do I like to use analog gear too? Absolutely, I wouldn't replace any of my amps either, and really am gassing to try the new Tone King Imperial Tri Amp pedal.

We live at a time when there are so many options available to us, and so many of them are amazing.

If you just need core tones, a bit of reverb and delay, simple modulation, just get the Tonex. It will do the job all day long.

If you need more routing options, plan to take lots of captures, like editing in a fast easy way on the unit itself, and like playing around with lots of effects, need midi control, expression control and more - it is worth the extra cash for a Quad Cortex!

Now, let's get back to the sound clips from the video!
